News and releases
2026
10/31/2026, Sassman
Top ten list – The Top Ten list is now kept up to date automatically. It is rebuilt at midnight and noon, Central time, from the experience rankings, and it still shows when each player entered the list and whether they moved up or down. Before this it was edited by hand, and the last update was in 2010.
Strongholds and shops – Player strongholds and player shops are switched off for now. Their areas are no longer loaded when the game starts, and the extra "dock" exit off the sea near Deepwater is gone. Nothing was deleted. If they come back, the news will say so.
More lists – New help pages: 'help richlist', 'help dragonlist', 'help pkscore', 'help pkkills' and 'help pkdeath'. 'help lists' shows them all. 'help hometownlist' now points to the live 'help townlist'. Lists are rebuilt at midnight and noon, Central time, and the creators' characters are no longer on any of them.
10/30/2026, Sassman
Leaderboards – The creators' characters no longer appear on the leaderboards (richest, top experience, PK, dragon killers and the rest), so the lists now show only players. They refresh at midnight and noon, Central time.
New website – powermud.com has a new look that works on phones and uses the full width of your screen. It has live leaderboards, a who's-online list, a Play page that explains how to connect, site search, and these release notes. Visit https://powermud.com
10/25/2026, Sassman
A fresh start – To give everyone an equal start, all of the old player characters and accounts were moved into an archive (they were not deleted). Only the creators' characters were kept. Everyone else begins new: make an account, create a character, and come explore. Welcome back, and welcome to the new players!
10/18/2026, Sassman
PowerMud is back – After years offline, the mud is running again on a new, modern server at powermud.com, port 2000. The game, the world and the code are the same ones you remember. Up to 40 players can be on at once.
Behind the scenes – The website is now secure (https), the game starts by itself after a reboot, backups are taken every week, and the admins get an email if the game or website stops answering. The nightly and noon statistics lists are running again.

Date : 2/26/2007, Viper
Arach- Tillith - Any member of Arach-Tillith who is a Matron Mother, High Priestess, or Priestess of their House will now get a SP regen bonus when resting. This bonus is just like the Muse bonus, in that it will

this bonus depends on which position you have.
Backstab - It is now impossible for a stunned opponent to dodge a Backstab attempt. You can still miss by tripping over your own feet,
though.
Date : 2/21/2007, Sassman
Profs - The Dragon hunter and Dragon Slayer Professions have been modified somewhat. Details below:
Any Guild can now get Dragon Slayer (prior to this only the 'upper' type Guilds could get it)
These two Professions do not count towards your 'points' that you get for your Guild. Essentially they are 'free' as
anyone can learn them.
These two Professions can no longer be learned from the trainer in Zahkar. Instead, a new trainer has been added.
Instead of paying for these Professions, you now need to
perform a Quest-like action. (No Quest Points rewarded)
This guy can also train your Claws/Biting Aversion. The
trainer is on Celtia, on a beach of the Relia Ocean.

show additional bonuses not otherwise specified.
Date : 1/21/2007 and 1/22/2007, Viper

The 'Pierce' and 'Offhand' requirements/affects have been
removed.
Hide/Sneak- Having a light source light like a torch or lantern will - prevent you from hiding and will give a large penalty for
sneak. If you only have one piece of EQ that gives light
then the penalty will be somewhat less and you may or may
not be able to hide at all.
Date : 1/17/2007, Viper
Thief - The 'Extort' command now gives out more 'Extortion' exp when a successful extortion takes place.

The vending machines will be there all of January only.
Hiding - Hide and Sneak functionality has be altered to take into account members of your group that happen to be in the same room as you.
Now you will know if group members are hidden in the room with
you, and will be able to see them enter and leave. You still
cannot use any kind of skills or spells on them, as this would
ruin their hiding place.
Languages - A new command called 'forget' is now in. It will allow you to unlearn a language you have already learned. Note that you can
never forget a language you started out with, though.
Date : 1/10/2007 and 1/11/2007, Viper
Mariner - The Gore attack has been upgraded. It now does more damage and also affects the target's Armor Class. It can also add an affect
of 'bleeding' on the target, which drains HP over time.
NOTE: This new 'bleeding' affect cannot kill any target, but it
can get the target down to one (1) HP.
Mariner - The Backhand attack has been upgraded to do a bit more damage, depending on the Strength of the user.
Doctor - If a Doctor has a 'bleeding' affect on their person, they will automatically stop the bleeding, assuming that they are not in
combat.
Succor - A successful use of Succor will stop any Bleeding that is on the target.
Bless - The proficiency that displays on the Effects command (poor, etc) for Bless and Blessed has been altered a bit to show the strength
of the blessing. Before you could probably only get up to
Good, not quite sure. That was not right, so now it will state
Perfect if indeed it is the highest Bless you can get. Please
note that the spells were NOT altered (and do not now give a
higher bless), only the Effects command displaying the strength
of the spell.
2006
Date : 12/22/2006, Apex
New Area - Check the main board for more information. (Post by Apex)
Date : 12/21/2006, Cyrgon, Viper
Webpage - The PK statistics has been fixed and updated. Check it out!
Spells - Before, if you failed to cast the Dispel Magic or Dispel Illusion spell on a target, the target attacked you. However the target
did not attack you if the spell was successful. That way is
backwards, so it has been switched.
Trainers - All skill trainers that are not associated with a particular Guild have been altered, concerning price of the skill to learn.
Your Charisma is looked at when the price is determined. A
higher Charisma means the price is lower, while a lower Charisma
will cause the price to be higher. The Charisma taken into
account is whatever your Charisma score is at that moment when
trying to learn the skill. So EQ and Spells/Scrolls that boost
your Charisma should be worn/used prior to learning an expensive
skill. (This does not affect learning spells or Psionics)
Date : 12/20/2006, Blink
Combat - When in battle, the 'order' that certain skills/actions take have been altered somewhat. Now, one particular sequence would be: Full dodge, stoneskins, partial dodge. Prior to this, full and partial dodge were both after the stoneskins check. Now, a full dodge, if completed, will occur before any stoneskins are hit.
Date : 12/14/2006, Viper
Food - Cooked food now has a 'Food Quality' rating. That rating is dependant on the Cook's 'Cooking Skill'. Also, having the Chef profession will greatly boost this rating. The higher the rating, the more the food will heal a player when it is eaten. It could possibly (at the highest level) double the HPs healed when eaten.
Date : 12/07/2006, Viper
Spells - The 'Find Traps' spell has been fixed. A small bug had made it so the attribute added had a ceiling. That has been fixed
so that now if the spell is lucky, you can get an added
attribute that is very high, higher than normal.
Artifact - The Bracelet of Vision's 'Find Traps' attribute has been doubled.
Psionics - The Psionics that had the ':' in them have been altered. They now have a dash '-' instead, so it is easier to make an alias
with them. Your 'psionics' command should list the new value.
You may have to adjust existing aliases to reflect their new
names. (These are the Energy and Body Control Psionics)
Date : 11/21/2006, Blink
Corpses - At this time, when a non-Player corpses disintegrates into nothing, anything on it's corpse will be destroyed if it is
non-magical and worth under 500 drakaan. So a torch for
instance would be destroyed and not moved to the room of the
corpse. Again, this does not affect anything that is magical,
worth over 500 drakaan, or drakaan itself.
NOTE: This change only concerns itself when the corpse
disintegrates on its own, not by bury or offer.
Carve - A new command 'carve' has been put in. Please see the 'help carve' help file for more information.
Cooking - A new recipe that uses raw meat has been added. Please check the 'cook list' to see the specifics on it.
Date : 11/17/2006, Viper
Arach- Tillith - All of the spells only learnable by a Priestess or higher have been upgraded. Also, the Level of the spells have been modified to fit the new Spell Level scheme. For Clerics, though, the

effects. Also, the general Damage done by the spell is increased.

will be affected. Everything else about dying is the same
though, like possibly losing skill exp, etc.
PK Areas - The number of areas that are loaded to be PK each reboot has been increased. You will notice that all of the large cities will be
loaded every time. The chance of all areas to load has also been
increased.
Spells - There are now 10 levels of spells, it used to be 5. Any spell that is above 5 will take some skill level in the Epic school
for that spell (Epic Abjuration for Siphon Weave for example).
Date : 10/31/2006, Viper
Sorcere - The 'Shockawe' spell has been put in. Note that it is only learnable and usable by a House Mage.

Effects - The 'Health Boost' effect from Intensification will now show up when using the 'effects' command.
Forge - The forge skill/cmd has been modified slightly in regards to dealing with enchanted items:
1) Resizing cannot be done on Enchanted items
2) Sharpen and Calibrate cannot be used on Enchanted items
3) Enhance cannot be done on Enchanted items
4) Repairing Enchanted items cost more than regular items,
but not near as much as Magical items.
Smithy Repair - The NPC Smiths have been notified in their breaking of the Labor Code section 4.3.5 paragraph 7. Until now they have been charging the same price for repairing normal items and Enchanted
items. The price has been raised to repair Enchanted items,
although that price is still lower than for Magical items.
Also, the NPC smiths will no longer resize armor that has been
Enchanted.
Enchant - As of now, any equipment that has been Enchanted will have that Enchantment eventually wear off. The Enchantment will wear off
after a certain number of times it gets damaged during combat.
This number of times is determined at the time of casting the
spell. The higher the skill of the caster, the longer the item
will last. All those currently in the game will have a default
value added to them. After the Enchantment wears off, the item
will become exactly as it was before the Enchantment.
Date : 10/20/06, Viper
Spells - The Striking and Greater Striking spells have been upgraded. That is, a weapon with this effect will now do more damage than before this change. Also, you can tell if a weapon has the spell on it, and the level of the effectiveness, just by looking at it. See the help files for the spells in order to see what the levels are.
Date : 10/17/06, Viper
Clerical Guilds - The duration of most 'buff' type spells has been increased. The increase is based on the player's 'Epic Faith' skill. See 'help clerical_spell_update' for the list of spells
that were affected.
Drow Artifact - The 'pet' statues have been removed from the prizes for the Drow Artifact quest. If you have already gotten one, you can turn it in and get another. Just contact Viper. The statues

Dunkrist Homeguard
Fighter Guilds - The Epic combat skills are now in. Please check your Guild trainer and/or help file to see if you get any. You have to have Perfect in the corresponding regular skill in order
to learn the Epic one. For instance, you have to have Perfect
'Slash' skill in order to learn 'Epic Slash', if you are a
Knight.
Profs - The Bladesman, Duelist, Archer, Sapper, and Brawler get a skill max bonus to their corresponding combat Epic. Please
see their help file for more information. Note that the
ability to learn the Epic skill depends on the Guild. If
your Guild cannot learn Epic Slash for instance, then getting
the Duelist Profession will not allow you to gain the skill.
Damage - There are 3 new damage messages at the top of the list. That is, 'MAMMOTH' damage was the highest you could get, at least
as far as the message went. Some more have been added. This
does not mean you are doing more damage now, it just means
that the top side of the messages have been expanded.
Before this, MAMMOTH encompassed _any_ amount of damage after
a certain amount.
Date : 9/27/06, Viper
Spells - Dispel Magic no longer dispels non-magical affects on NPCs. It used to dispel natural (racial) affects that the creature had, but it will not any longer. The SP cost for the spell, also, has been reduced.
Date : 9/26/06, Viper
Non-Combat Skills/Cmds - The amount of regular experience awarded for a successful roundusing a non-combat command has been increased. For instance, when you successfully catch a fish, sometimes you get regular
experience along with Fishing experience. Now you will get it
more often when you succeed, and more of it. Professions give
bonuses to this amount as well. Such as, you will get more
experience as a Blacksmith when you successfully Forge an item,
than if you were not a Blacksmith. Note that it is still
possible to _not_ get any regular experience in these situations,
but that chance is much lower now. Cmds/Skills affected:

Command - At long last the Haste and Enhanced Haste Spells have been fixed. The issue was that it was giving a very large penalty to the other NPC (or PC)'s TO HIT. It was not the AC Bonus that I thought it was. The Bug was that any NPC or PC you fought could hardly hit you, that is the part that is fixed. Thanks to Elaug for helping me find the bug!

NPC's - You may notice that certain NPCs are now hitting harder, for more damage. This happened because a bug with their weapon
class has been fixed. You will notice this on those NPCs
who used to hit MUCH harder when not wielding a weapon, and
on those high level NPCs who's wielded weapon does not have
such a high weapon class. The change will not be terribly
great, but will certainly be of some impact.
NOTE: Not all changes are in, I just wanted you all to have
advanced warning of it happening.
Date : 01/27/2005, Couger and Viper

Spells/EQ - Protection from Good/Evil/Undead have been modified a few ways. The damage that it prevents is somewhat random now.

is due to the low level of the spell, and the potential
usefulness far outstripped that low level (hence, BS).
Psionics - Previously, the 'delay' between Psionic uses was halved if the target dodged your mental attack, or you just failed
the psionic. It is now NOT halved, and will be the same

Psionics - Finally, all of the bonuses for Mentalist have been put in. If you have that Profession, you will probably notice better results
when using the Discipline Psionics.
Dragonfear - There was a bug that allowed the dodging and evasion of a Dragon's 'quick' attack (their special) with no penalties when you are
being affected by Dragonfear. That has been fixed, so you will
now note that it is a lot harder to dodge/evade those types of
attacks while under the influence of Dragonfear.
Knights - The 'knight-salute' attack has been modified. You now do more base damage, and the damage done while mounted has been inproved
quite a bit. Also the bonus you get for damage if the target

or if stoneskins or images blocked all the damage. They
come from various sources, like the Assassin daggers.
Troubadour - There have been caps put on the maximum values that you can get out of all the songs. For instance, Allegro will now
only give a max of 4 to your Dex. Having Bardic Enhancement,
EQ bonuses, and better instruments will still give you a
better chance to get a higher value for each song. Most
of the songs were fairly BS and had to be adjusted. They
usually were better than any spells, which makes no sense.

them to hit the correct (4 or 5) number of times, so beware of
any high level NPC, especially the Dragons.
Dragons- Shimmer had a bug where he would usually attack 4-6 times a round - with the regular Melee attacks (biting and claws). Shimmer should
only attack 1-5 times per round now, for those Melee attacks.

Skills - Three new skills have been put in: Unarmed Dual/Triple/Quadruple. These skills are learned by various Guilds, so check your Guild
Trainers. Some Guilds Max out these skills lower than others, too.
Also, the Brawler Profession has the Highest possible skill max
you can get, and you get all 3 skills when you learn Brawler.
Each skill has a help file. Keep in mind that these skills do
not apply to Monks.
PSI - There is a new Psionics-only channel called 'psispeak'. Only those who have Psionics can use this channel. You have to turn it on
before you can use it, too (use 'channels psispeak on').
PSI - The Feeblemind spell will now drastically limit a Psionically-aware individual to use their Psionic skills. However, casting that spell
on a Psionically-aware individual will be harder than when casting
the spell on a normal individual.
PSI - A new Psionic Discipline skill has been put in, check the trainer.

Spells - The Darkness and Light spell cannot be used in the Killing Fields, except to cast on yourself. Also, the Continual Light spell has
been altered and cannot be used except on yourself, regardless
if you are in the Killing Fields or not.
Fields - When fighting in the Killing Fields you will no longer gain ANY skill/school/psionic experience. None. This was taken out because
a lot of Players abused the ability to get easy exp when fighting
another Player in a non-killable environment.
Date : 04/19/04, Viper
All - Before, the Dodging and Evasion skill would only depend on the skill of the NPC or PC who was in fact dodging or evading. So,
that entity would Dodge/Evade at the same rate vs a Dragon or a
Squirrel. The target's skills had nothing to do with success.
Since that obviously makes no sense, the success of a Dodge/Evade
now is also impacted by the opponent's 'To Hit' bonuses, their
Dexterity, and their skill with whatever weapon they are using.
Knight - The resting healing of Skill/Spell Points has been raised for Knights. Before, the Knights were using the standard regen that
all the other fighting Guilds used. Since they have spells, though,
they are now right in between the fighting Guilds and the Clerical
Guilds in relation to SP regen while resting.

Monk - You now have an Epic skill, check Justarius for the name of it.

Date : 04/14/04, Viper
Dragon - If you are affected by Dragonfear, any Guild attack command (cleave, feint, etc) will suffer a penalty when fighting a Dragon. This
penalty only affects the chance of success, not damage done.
Mages - There are new 'Epic' Schools for the Mage Guilds (Bastion, Sorcere, Illusionist, and Battlemage). They can be learned when the lower
School (Evocation, etc) is at Perfect. Do a 'list' at the trainer
for that School for more info. The benefits of these Epic Schools
are similar to the magical EQ mentioned in 'help magical boost'.
The higher the Epic School, the better the benefit mentioned in that
help file. Note that this is the ONLY benefit, as these Epic Schools
are in no way releated to any other Epic skills such as Epic Faith.
Date : 04/13/04, Viper
Psi - The 'maxes' for each discipline has been raised in general. Those of you who have Psionics have been adjusted, and all of you now have
a higher Max skill level in each of the 3 disciplines.

factoring in success, and will NOT work on a target that has already
been blinded.
Dragon - If you are affected by Dragonfear, the following skills will have a penalty when attempting to use them when fighting a Dragon:
Dual, Triple, Quadruple, Dodging, and Evasion
Date : 04/12/04, Arruns

chance the spell will work successfully.

Spells - The damage that Acid Arrow does has been raised. Also, the spell will NOT go through Mirror Images now.
Spells - Two new spells have been added to Mage-type guilds. Check your trainers and spell lists to see which you now have,
if any. (Bastion, Sorcere, and Battlemage only)
City - A Gem Dealer has moved into the city of Kalinport. Check the city map to see where. (Use 'maps kalinport')
Date : 03/30/04, Viper
Cleric - There is a new skill called 'Epic Faith' that can be learned by very experienced Clerics. See 'help epic faith' for more
information. More 'epic' stuff for other Guilds is in the works.
Armor - Minotaurs can now wear a Helmet, as long as it is a specific type that is indeed usable by Minotaurs. You will be able to
tell by looking at the helmet. There are two types that can
be 'forged' (help forge) and there is also a Magic helm that
is out there in a dragon's hoard.
Date : 03/29/04, Viper
Potion - Several potions had a minor glitch where sometimes they would not last very long after being quaffed, sometimes lasting only a few seconds. They have been fixed and should last quite a bit longer, on average. The potions adjusted were: fly, weakness, strength, free action, water breating, agility, and detect invisibility
Date : 03/24/04, Viper
Spells - The amount and time of inspiration given by the Prayer spell has been significantly increased.
Arrows - The weight of a bundle of arrows has been reduced by about 33%.
Profs - The Muse profession has been made a Lower profession. Please see 'help muse' for more information. Several Guilds cannot
learn this profession now, check 'help professions' to see
which ones can learn it. A Muse now gets a bonus to the
length of time between 'sp heals' when resting, as well as
a bonus to the sp amount that is healed. Previously the bonus
only applied to the sp amount healed. The Constitution
requirement for learning Muse has been removed.
Date : 03/23/04, Viper & Sassman
All - The regeneration rate has been altered to have a minimum time between 'heals'. Previously there was no minimum and it was
possible to get a 'heal' every round in some cases.
All - The wait time between uses of 'succor' has been increased. The time is now approximately double what it used to be.
Date : 03/19/04, Viper
Spells - Previously, the spell damage done when a Player casts a spell at another player was reduced by 50%. Now that reduction is
at 25%. Therefore you will see that damage spells will do more
damage when cast by a Player, at another Player.
Spells - The 'Dispel Magic' spell has been altered. Any Guild that can cast spells now gets a Bonus to resist the effects of the spell.
Mage type Guilds get a higher Bonus than Clerical type Guilds.
In the same vein, Guilds that do not have any spell casting
ability will now have a slight Penalty. That is, the spell will
affect those Guilds easier. This all only affects the target,
there has been no change on the entity casting the spell.
Ranger - Previously a Ranger would only shoot one arrow during any round when a delay was in affect. For instance, after using 'disarm'
a Ranger would only shoot one arrow a round for 2 rounds. This
check has been taken out.

Date : 02/18/04, Viper
All - Two items have been added to the Forge command : Steel Arrow (1), and Steel Arrows (a bundle of the arrows).
All - Judge now works for arrows. However it only takes into account the regular damage that an arrow can do, not any damage from an 'extra'
source like Energy or Poison, etc. Note that is for comparing one
arrow with another one, as by judging them by itself is not a true
indication of the effectivesness. The reason fir this is that the
damage an arrow does is added to the Bow's weapon class.
Date : 02/17/04, Viper
Mage - Check out 'help magical boost' for information on new Magic EQ that gives out helpful bonuses to spellcasting.
Cleric - The following spells have been upgraded (they now heal more) :Cure LightCure SeriousCure CriticalHealArea Heal This applies to any Player or NPC who cast an above spell. Potions

extra hit in.
Date : 02/12/04, Viper
All - The chance of misfiring a spell while under the affects of Dragonfear have been potentially reduced. Your Natural Dragonfear resistance
(if any) and any magical Dragonfear resistance is now applied to the
success/failure rate, and was not in there before. Also, if you are
a Dragon Hunter (or Slayer) then you get a bonus as well. Your DKR
may affect it too (see below).
All - There is now a DKR on your 'character' sheet. DKR means Dragon Killer Rating, and is calculated by determining how many dragons you have
killed. (Killing means you get the last and final deathblow) This
will improve your basic chance at resisting Dragonfear, and will
affect spellcasting (see above).
Cleric - You will now be able to cast spells on players who share your Guild's alignment (Church is Good, Trinty is Evil, etc) and also Neutral
players. Before you could not always assist Neutral players.

All - When you are freed from the Jaarmin Keep jail, you now cannot be re-jailed for at least three minutes. Previously there was no 'free'
time at all.
All - The Priests in Minot now correctly display their special attack. It has always been 'blunt' and now will look that way.
All - Demogorgon, Orcus, and Gothmog have been upgraded slightly. The loading chance for the items they carry has been upped as well.
